One of the most important parts to classic car restoration is blast cleaning. This is when soda or glass particles are blasted at the car body to clean it from paint, dirt, rust, grime and anything else that might be hanging about.
Some people also also sandblasting to clean, but we have found that it can be very abrasive and soda blasting or glass bead blasting are a lot less aggressive and give us the best finish to prepare to bring your car back to its former glory.
Blast cleaning can be used to clean almost anything – especially metals and wood. A less abrasive method can even be used to polish, and one of the first major blast cleaning projects was the Statue of Liberty in the 1982. In fact, you can find that dentists use a very mild form of soda blasting to clean your teeth!
Here at RBW Classic Cars, we use soda blasting or glass blasting to clean down our classic cars, ensuring that all debris, paint and grime is removed before repairing, etching and painting. It is the ideal way to prepare the metal of the car body to achieve the best results.
Soda blasting has another great advantage in the restoration of classic cars, in that it doesn’t damage other components such as rubber or the mechanical aspects of the car – although we are always careful to not let them get in contact.
We have a special soda and glass blasting machine which includes a high powered blast generator, the containment of high pressure compressed air, a moisture decontamination system, blast hose, and a blast nozzle.
The soda used is formulated sodium bicarbonate – otherwise known as baking soda, although it isn’t exactly what you will find in your kitchen – it has been slightly modified for a better effect. This sodium bicarbonate fragments on impact meaning that it literally explodes away any dirt, paint or grime, but in a much gentler way than other substances such as sand which stays hard. This allows us to give the car body a much gentler clean.
Glass bead blasting is another option which we offer. The glass beads are very effective for cleaning classic car parts, and for us, is definitely preferable to sand.
Both the soda and glass products that we use here at RBW Classic Cars are environmentally sound and safe.
Our glass and soda blasters have had specific training and we ensure that they use all of the recommended safety equipment.
The process of glass or soda blast cleaning your classic car – or other items is a relatively simple one. Once the parts that are to be blast cleaned have been exposed, our specialist blast cleaner will use the blasting machine to clean the areas. The cleaned area is then wiped down to remove ay dust or debris and the car body is now ready to be etched and painted.
Once it has been `blasted`, the body is in the perfect condition to be painted ensuing the best outcome that is possible.
